Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to the questions we’re asked most often. Recent questions are in bold.

Q: Do you have information regarding the Murray Baker Bridge?

A: The Murray Baker Bridge is 3,247 feet long, 61 feet wide and 80 feet tall. It was named for a Caterpillar vice president who helped bring the company to Peoria.

The original color was gray. It was painted orange in 1984 and repainted warm gray as part of the Upgrade 74 project in 2005.

Crews will use enough concrete during the reconstruction to pour a five-foot sidewalk 13 miles long.

1,000,000 square feet of the bridge were sandblasted and repainted during the last six months.

12,000 gallons of paint were used to paint the bridge.

The last time the bridge was painted it took two years.

Q: How do I find out where construction is happening and the latest closed roads to avoid?

A: The Upgrade74.com homepage features a map that lists all current road construction and dates. Similar information can be found by calling our toll-free hotline at 1-866-I74-NEWS.

Q: How much will the project cost?

A: The estimated total cost for Upgrade 74 will be nearly $500 million.

Q: If safety is such a concern, why has it taken so long for this project to begin?

A: We needed to wait until funding became available. However, we have been planning and developing the project all along while waiting for funds.

Q: What exactly will be done to I-74?

A: I-74 from East Peoria through Peoria will be completely removed and replaced. Upgrade 74 will provide new overpasses, all new pavement, and safer on and off ramps. Additionally, new, brighter lighting and landscaping will be added to provide motorists with a safer, better-looking highway.
